Purchase furniture that serves double duty.

  You can get a changing table that turns over to become a dresser. Purchase a
  crib that converts to a day bed. This can save you money when it is time to
  convert to a toddler room.

Plan for extra storage space.

Give yourself more storage space than you think you will need.  You will use it.  Look for shelves that accent your baby nursery decor in addition to keeping the room organized.

Have a comfortable place for your newborn to sleep.

During your newborn's first month, she or he have the option of sleeping in a mosses basket when not
  in the crib. Consider patterns that coordinate with your baby room nursery decor.

Don't forget to have some soft lighting over the changing table.

  Using soft lighting will calm the baby and won't irritate their sensitive eyes.

Plan carefully where to place the crib.

  If possible, don't place the crib right next to a window where winds or sun
  rays could harm the baby. Also try to keep the crib away from heating or cooling
  vents.
